Beyond GDP, put to work

We help governments, businesses and civil society put social progress measurement to use. Right now, most of our effort goes into business, so that is where this page starts.

Why outcomes matter

Most of what companies report about their impact on people is about effort: a policy adopted, an audit done, a training run. Those things matter, but they don't tell you whether anyone is better off. Beyond-GDP measures took a different route for countries. It measures only outcomes, such as whether people have clean water, feel safe, and can get an education. It leaves money and good intentions out of the score.

Why business, why now

The European Union's rules on corporate sustainability due diligence were scaled back in 2026. Fewer companies are covered, and the deadline moved to 2029. But one idea survived and got stronger: companies should look first where the risk to people is greatest.

That sounds simple. In practice it means a company needs a credible picture of social conditions in dozens of countries and sectors at once.

We think any serious answer to that has to meet a few tests:

  1. It measures conditions on the ground, rather than paperwork.

  2. It covers the whole supply chain, including the suppliers a company never deals with directly.

  3. It is built on public, comparable data, so results can be checked.

  4. It is simple enough for a procurement team to act on.
